Until he retired in 2020, Peter Canby was a senior editor and head of the fact-checking department at The New Yorker. That means that every word of every piece-investigative and otherwise, had to be eyed and approved by him. He thus became a legend at the magazine, and though some say that no one is irreplaceable, according to all accounts at The New Yorker, Peter actually is. He is the author of The Heart of the Sky: Travels Among the Maya (HarperCollins). The book won a silver Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers. He’s written for The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Harper’s, The Nation, and elsewhere. His work has been anthologized in Best American Science Writing, Best American Travel Writing, and Best Adventure and Survival Stories. He will recount his experiences working with renowned editors like Wallace Shawn, Tina Brown and David Remnick as well as his thoughts on how fact checking specifically and journalism in general have evolved over the years. Moderated by Nancy Steiner.
