Oct. 9th, 2024 – Earlier this week, we held a compelling event in partnership with Hope’s Door and Susan Williamson, owner of Booksy Galore, featuring Michelle Horton, the author of the acclaimed memoir Dear Sister. The event brought together the community to explore the profound impact of domestic violence and criminalized survival on families and society.
Horton’s memoir tells the harrowing story of her sister, Nikki Addimando, who spent seven years incarcerated for killing her longtime abuser, a case that gained widespread attention. Released from Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in January 2024, Nikki’s freedom marked the beginning of a new chapter for her family. In Dear Sister, Horton shared the devastating fallout she faced as she raised Nikki’s young children while battling the criminal justice system and coping with her own grief. The memoir offers a deeply personal and powerful account of resilience, survival, and the unbreakable bond between sisters.
During the event, Horton spoke candidly about her family’s journey through trauma, touching on broader societal issues surrounding domestic violence and the criminalization of survivors. Attendees were moved by her story and the raw honesty with which she discussed the long-lasting effects of abuse and the strength required to overcome it.
The conversation emphasized the importance of supporting survivors of domestic violence and highlighted the essential work of organizations like Hope’s Door in providing resources and support to those affected. The Playhouse was honored to host such an impactful and thought-provoking event for the community.
