Oct 20, 2026 – Earlier this week, we welcomed audiences for a special screening of Mario, a documentary exploring the life, legacy, and enduring ideals of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo. The screening was followed by a conversation with the filmmakers, moderated by Nancy Steiner, featuring George Kunhardt, Teddy Kunhardt, and Maria Cuomo Cole.

Set against the backdrop of Ronald Reagan’s America, Mario traces Cuomo’s journey from the son of Italian immigrants to a three-term governor who championed government as a force for compassion and social progress.

Through archival footage, personal reflections from family members, and excerpts from Cuomo’s diaries, the film offers an intimate portrait of a leader shaped by humility, intellect, and the sacrifices of his parents’ generation. His early legal battles defending working-class families against powerful interests helped establish his conviction that public service should prioritize those without privilege—a principle that would define his decades in politics.

Following the screening, the filmmakers joined audiences for a discussion exploring Cuomo’s personal history, political philosophy, and lasting legacy. The conversation offered an opportunity to reflect on the values that guided his leadership, including empathy, eloquence, and a deep sense of moral responsibility.

The event exemplified Bedford Playhouse’s commitment to bringing audiences together through film and meaningful conversations that connect history, culture, and contemporary life.
