In 1941, Nazi soldiers were slaughtering Eastern European Jews by the thousands. Three brothers, Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber) and Asael (Jamie Bell), manage to escape and take refuge in the forest where they played in childhood. Seeking a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones, the brothers turn their daily struggle for survival into a battle against the Nazis. As news of their exploits spreads, others join the fray, willing to risk their lives for even brief freedom. Beau Geste, directed by Herbert Brenon, was Paramount’s most important release of 1926, and was the Best Picture winner at the Photoplay Awards – a year previous to the arrival of The Academy. The film starred matinee idol Ronald Colman and some of the top actors of the day – Neil Hamilton, Ralph Forbes, Alice Joyce, Mary Brian, Norman Trevor, Noah Beery, Victor McLaglen, and a young William Powell. This restoration premiered in April at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood as part of the TCM Festival, and will screen this summer at The Museum of Modern Art. There will be a 10-minute intermission.
