Beau Geste, directed by Herbert Brenon, was Paramount’s most important release of 1926, and was the Best Picture winner at the Photoplay Awards – a year previous to the arrival of The Academy.
The film starred matinee idol Ronald Colman, who was borrowed by Paramount from Samuel Goldwyn, and featured some of the top actors of the day – Neil Hamilton, Ralph Forbes, Alice Joyce, Mary Brian, Norman Trevor, Noah Beery, Victor McLaglen, and a young William Powell.
This restoration premiered in April at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood as part of the TCM Festival, and will screen this summer at The Museum of Modern Art.
*There will be a 10-minute intermission.
90% of all silent films ever made have been lost. For decades, it was rumored that a complete version of Beau Geste had been preserved, but the film was never fully protected.
Robert Harris and James Mockoski were authorized by The Paramount Archive to reconstruct and restore the film, which led to an 18 month odyssey, involving not only the studio, but every major American archive, which all contributed their holdings to the cause.
With multiple problematic film elements as a source, Beau Geste has now been restored to as close as possible to its original release.
The film will be presented with a newly recorded score by The Mont Alto Orchestra, and will be presented as it was in 1926 – with an intermission.
