A Rescue Feast with Second Chance Foods

Dates with showtimes for A Rescue Feast with Second Chance Foods
  • Sun, Jun 14

Run Time: 90 min.

Join us for an engaging family program centered around a read-aloud of A Rescue Feast, followed by hands-on activities that introduce children to the principles of food recovery and composting. Through storytelling and guided exploration, young participants will begin to understand how food can be used thoughtfully rather than wasted.

After the reading, children will take part in interactive stations that encourage observation and decision-making: planting green onion roots to explore regrowth, sorting foods to determine what can be reused or composted, and tasting a sample of applesauce that connects these ideas to everyday experience.

Books will be available for sale and signing.

Second Chance Foods

Second Chance Foods is a Hudson Valley nonprofit that rescues large quantities of surplus food and turns it into nutritious, prepared meals for hunger relief organizations. By bridging the gap between food waste and food access, the organization serves thousands of meals while advancing a more sustainable and equitable food system.

A portion of the proceeds from this program will directly support the work of Second Chance Foods.

Kathryn LaCombe is the author of A Rescue Feast and the Culinary Director at Second Chance Foods. After years of hands-on work in food rescue — cooking, sorting, repackaging, and delivering food alongside volunteers of all ages — she realized how rarely children’s books show what this work actually looks like. A Rescue Feast grew from a desire to tell that story in a way that is honest, hopeful, and accessible to young readers. Through writing and programs, LaCombe helps children understand where food comes from, why it matters, and how caring for each other and the planet can start small — right where they are.
