During WWII, a transport ship with non-functional lifeboats and inadequate lifebelts was sunk by one of the first radio-guided missiles, killing 1,015 U.S. soldiers—making it the greatest loss of life at sea in any U.S. war. Classified documents reveal that neglect and oversight played a role in the tragedy, yet the government declared the incident classified and silenced survivors. Many families never learned the truth.
