His Glorious Night with Gideon Fountain and Janet Maslin

Join us for a screening of His Glorious Night followed by a Q&A with guest Gideon Fountain, grandson of silent film legends John Gilbert and Leatrice Joy, in conversation with Janet Maslin. Released by M-G-M in 1929, this early sound film forever changed Hollywood history and the career of matinee idol John Gilbert. For decades, His Glorious Night, directed by Lionel Barrymore, has been shrouded in rumor. Was Gilbert’s voice unsuited for talkies, or was he sabotaged by studio head Louis B. Mayer? Now, nearly a century later, this rare M-G-M production, later remade as A Breath of Scandal, has been restored after decades in Paramount’s vaults. The film, which inspired Singin’ in the Rain, is being presented for reappraisal in this special benefit screening for Bedford Playhouse.
